[email protected] ​ notices featured piper evening - 5th september 2018 our featured local piper for september is kyle cameron, fresh from his win in the under 15 piobroch competition at the northern meeting society meetings the society meet on the 1st and 3rd wednesdays of each month in the club , 5 gordon terrace (parking from mitchell's lane) inverness. come around 7:50 for 8.00pm. we usually play for about an hour to an hour and a half, everybody is welcome regardless of experience. come and play or just come to listen. featured piper evenings to enhance the social aspect of the society we launched monthly 'featured piper' evenings in 2015. local pipers are invited to play a slightly extended session in an informal setting on the first wednesday of every month except january and august. the evenings are intended to be social gatherings and attendance has run anywhere from 15 to 25. we hope to continue to see a healthy gathering of local piping enthusiasts. piping begins at 8:00pm. free sandwiches are provided and drinks are available for purchase downstairs at the bar. come along for an evening of good piping. this is not a formal recital and as always, other pipers are encouraged to bring their pipes and have a tune. all players of any age, gender, and ability are welcome. ​ ​ recent evenings - john mclaren, december 2017 john mclaren made his third appearance as a featured player of the society and played for a small but very appreciative audience of eight. it has been a real treat to hear this young lad develop as a player over the last few years. displaying a wide ranging repertoire, john played a mix of traditional tunes, some piobaireachd, and some modern compositions; favouring the latter. some people complain about modern tunes being just a jumble of notes with no melodic structure and while this can be the case, the receipt of the tune depends so much on the delivery. john displayed not only remarkable control of his technique but a growing sense of maturity in his playing by putting some welcome expression in these tunes. john continued to impress with the extent of his repertoire by allowing himself to be gently cajoled into playing not just the usual half hour or so for a featured player but for the entire evening. an impressive performance indeed! our thanks go not only to john for playing but to his parents for bringing him and, of course, to his teacher niall matheson who has done a superb job of developing this fine young player who is one to be watched.
